My Top 5 Winter Skin Tips

Did you know that TODAY is Winter Skin Relief Day?! Every year, on January 8th, winter skin is celebrated… or maybe the relief options are what really deserve to be celebrated.

Winter time is notorious for drying out your skin and leaving you in misery. Between the cold, wind and dry air outside and the heat inside trying to keep up, so many people find themselves in a less than pleasant state during these long winter months.

Winter skin is something that has plagued our household for years. Russ fights dry, cracked hands, I battle scaly, itchy legs and Emily gets her face chapped so badly it turns bright red. We know first hand that winter skin dilemmas can be frustrating and painful.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Today I am sharing my top 5 tips to help keep your skin happy during the cold winter months.

#1 Cool It Down

Hot showers and baths always feel good when it is cold out, but try to turn the heat down a bit. Intense heat in the shower often breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin resulting in a loss of moisture. It is best to avoid using really hot water, especially on your face.

#2 Protect Your Skin

No, sunscreen isn’t just for the summer months. The sun can still be pretty intense during the winter, damaging your skin. I find that using a daily moisturizer, like CeraVe Skin Renewing Day Cream, that contains an SPF in it is just the protection I need.

Also remember to protect your skin from the wind with layers and avoid wet socks or gloves.

#3 Invest in a Humidifier

Keeping your home warm in the winter means blasting in hot, dry air. Using a humidifier to restore some of the moisture into the air can help prevent your skin from drying out.

#4 Use a Quality Moisturizer

Investing in quality products that protect and sooth is really important at a time when your skin needs it most. One of my favorite brands is CeraVe. They offer affordable products that work for my families needs and actually do what they say. I can also find a CeraVe product for everything. But my absolute favorite is their Healing ointment.

#5 Create a Routine

For me the biggest hurdle to keep my skin healthy in the winter months is being proactive. It’s not waiting for a problem to come up before I begin to treat it. By establishing a healthy skin routine, before problems arise, I generally avoid them all together. Find what works for you and stick with it.

Do you fight winter skin issues?
