Mom-cation {2016}

Noun [Mom-key-shuh-n}
When two or more moms escape their every day lives to rest, recharge and relax.
There must be laughing, good food, and chocolate.

Recently I ran away. I ran away with my dear friend Anna just to get a way for a bit. To relax, to rest, to plan some home school science for the year. To have just a few days where someone didn’t need something from me every 15 minutes and I could think without being interrupted

Don’t get me wrong…. I LOVE being a mom.

I love this mom life more than words could ever say. But sometimes even a break from something that we love can do the heart good.

We loaded up the car late one Friday afternoon and took off!

Our destination was Eureka Springs AR which happens to be the quaint little town that Russ and I got married at. In fact, I hadn’t been there since our wedding weekend almost 9 years ago!

We arrived around supper time and quickly decided that we needed to find food. After seeing sign upon sign and ad after ad we ended up at the Rockin Pig Saloon. Classy, right?! Name aside, the food there was AMAZING. We couldn’t decide what we wanted so we ended up splitting our meals. I think that was a very wise choice.

mom-3After we “pigged” out *baha ha* we went back to the hotel where we discovered the science curriculum we assumed would be so easy to plan… wasn’t so easy at all. After hashing out two lessons we called it a night.

The next morning we slept in mom style… you know, until 7:00. We ate breakfast and went back to lesson planning before escaping to do some touristy things.

After a few *dozen* attempts to take a good selfie at “the big Jesus” some Aussies clearly saw our struggle and asked if they could take a picture of us.

Much better.

We also stopped in a little old church were I was able to listen to Anna play the piano for just a bit and caught this photo of her standing on a pew attempting to get a photo just right. Anyone who takes photos knows the struggle is real.

Next up we ventured down town. This is actually the building Russ and I stayed at when we got married.

And this is the spot where we said I do! It was so fun to be back at this spot. But it did make me wish Russ was there to share a smooch with. We should go back next year for anniversary #10.

We headed back to the hotel to cool off, eat some fudge that we purchased, take a nap, and plan some more school. *whomp whomp whomp*

After we had our fill of “fun” it was time for dinner. We picked Aquarius Taqueria. The menus were made out of beer cases, the service was terrible, but the crowd was huge.

After we ate I knew exactly why people love this place, the food was so good and very authentic too.

The rest of the night was spent snacking, watching TV and you guessed it… lesson planning.

On Sunday we slept in even later, 7:30, before having breakfast and packing up to head home. We originally thought we would stay longer, but we opted to leave a bit earlier and arrive home by lunch time.

Mom-cation seemed like a pipe dream but I am so glad we made it reality. I am also so thankful for our awesome husbands who not only let us go away but rocked dad life while we were gone.

So to those of you out there saying. I should do that with a friend of mine I would whole heartedly say, DO IT! You won’t be sorry you did.

I’ve been waiting for this post! Good for you gals! You & Russ definitely need to go back. Your dinners from the first night look so delicious! I hate it when customer service is terrible, but the food is delicious because you want to go back but then you don’t at the same time. haha!

How long have you & Anna been friends?

    • I know, right?! When we go back we totally have to go to both of theses places. I know Russ would LOVE both of them. I really think we need to make a trip happen next year even if it is just an over night that we have to take the girls on too. It would be fun to show them where we got married at :P.

    • Ooooppps missed that last question. I met Anna a little over 6 years ago. Our husbands were working together and one told the other hed just found out his wife was pregnant only for the other to reply he’d just found out his was too. They knew we HAD to meet. Her David and my Emily were due and born just two days apart. I am SO thankful for her friendship.

        Oh that’s the sweetest!

  • Awww, this sounds like such fun! I’m glad you got away for a bit and had a good time, even though there was work involved (when is there not lol)! 🙂

    • So true! Thanks you. Even it it was work uninterrupted work was such a blessing. It was nice to feel like we actually got something done.

  • What a fun post! I’m sure it’s a blessing to have someone to lesson plan with, too! The selfie with Big Jesus cracked me up! Have a great week!

    • IT is! I love having someone to do life with in ALL kinds of areas. So thankful for her and our friendship. You too!

  • Such a fun and much needed weekend! Glad you got away!

    • Yes it was! Me too, can I go again already?! 😛

      • Ha! That’s totally how I feel about Mexico! Take me back!

  • Meghan Flinn

How fun, even with all the lesson planning! At this point even a girls’ day (or just a night) out sounds amazing! I’ll have to schedule one ASAP!

    • Exactly and it sure the heck beat doing all of that planning by myself. That would have been THE WORST!

  • Jessica

Oh my goodness that sounds like so much fun. Even the lesson planning is more fun with a friend. So glad you got that time away and had some Beth time. You deserve it. 🙂 I’m in the works with planning one with my bestie.

    • YES! If I had to plan that science at home alone I would have consumed A LOT of ice cream and cried. I bet you girls think of something awesome to do!

  • Andrea Deitz Sprout

Mom-cations are the best! I turn 40 at the end of the week and my BBF and I are headed to the Bahamas on a cruise at the end of September to celebrate…cannot wait!!!!!!

    • WHAT?! You totally win! That sounds epic! I hope you have an awesome time.

  • Ashley

Sounds like a great time and I love that you have a home schooling friend to lesson plan with!!!

A few weeks ago I got into a “conversation” with my MIL (one of many to be truthful) about Home Schooling. We have differing opinions and let’s just say she does not support the idea. Despite her feelings on the matter (or in spite of) I’m more seriously looking into this option for my girls!!

    • It is so nice.

Yeah I don’t think my parents were fans of our decision either. I remember one intense conversation with my mom when I told her we were homeschooling and then we never talked about it again. I think they have definitely seen the advantages and good that comes from it though. Don’t ever let anyone’s opinion (even family) on the subject sway how you feel or influence you. You guys could seriously rock homeschooling. I have no doubts at all.

  • yay for mom-cations! Looks like you had an awesome time.

  • what a wonderful rejuvinating weekend!!!! And yay for lesson planning being done.

    • It was and yay indeed! Now I can try and forget about school for the next two weeks…. :'(.

  • What a wonderful time! I think I need to plan a momcation! I haven’t been out of town with my girls since before I had kids! Sad, I know.

    • Haha this was my first time EVER so if you wanna talk about sad…. :P.

  • Sounds like the perfect getaway! Cracking up on the big Jesus! Sorry I missed that. haha

    • It’s formally called The Christ of The Ozarks but big Jesus is just way more fun :P.

  • I’ve had one of these in the works for ages and somebody keeps ending up pregnant lol. One day =) I’m sure the sleeping in and eating lots of food would be amazing!!! I’m hungry reading this.

    • Y’all must have plans to get wild or something ;). It was fantastic, fantastic I tell you!

  • How fun! I need to do one of these and soon! 🙂 Looks like you had a blast and after that first meal I don’t know why you weren’t somewhere new the second night, hehe 🙂

    • Lol! It was so much fun. Wish we could do it again sans all the science planning.

  • Glad to hear you had a good time!

    • We totally did. Didn’t you go on a girls trip recently?! Can’t wait to hear about it.

  • So much fun!! I would love, love to do this! Glad that you had fun (even though you did have to do some lesson planning….

    • It was so much fun and lesson planning was 10 times better not having to do it alone!

  • Little breaks like this can be so good for the soul. What a cute little town you visited! Sounds like a great time!

    • It is the cutest little town and I completely agree. I wish I prioritized things like this and made them happen more often.

  • Desiree @ Macke Monologues

This is the best idea, ever! I so need to round up a few ladies and run away for a weekend.
    And that town? SO. CUTE!!!

    • That town screams girl weekend it is fantastic. You should totally take one soon!

  • What a FUN weekend!!! So glad you were able to escape for a little getaway to rest and recharge. And don’t you love that sleeping in for a mom is 7am? Sad but seriously SO TRUE. I would love to sleep until 7!

    • YES! I usually wake up pretty early to get to the gym or out of guilt over all the things I need to do. So waking up at 7 was pretty fantastic. Plus we were both so tired from life that we weren’t really staying up super late either.

  • Onion fries and time away from kiddos. Oh I am so jealous!!! I am glad you had fun 🙂

    • Thank you so much. It was so good and so needed.

  • chall1018

Okay, you two are adorable! Sounds like a fun trip. I’m drooling over that food. Glad you had a good time!

    • That food… oh my goodness. I am not sure if it was THAT good or it tasted better because I didn’t have to cook it :P. We had a great time.

  • Sometimes a Mom needs a chance to not be a Mom and just be a person… a friend, a sister, a wife, anything but someone in high demand.

    • So true. I think that was the best part of the weekend. being able to just be Beth.

  • Always good and healthy to get away! I’ve never been away with a friend…ever! Looks so fun! My mom and I have a trip planned to Waco this fall and I’m super excited!

    • That would be fun too! Any time away is always relaxing. Glad I got this break even if it was a lot of work. At least I could work in peace.
