A Busy Moms Guide To An Active Lifestyle

There are two things in life that are very important to me. Being a good, present, engaged mom and maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. I used to feel like they would constantly fight against each other, each one vying for my attention. So often this left me feeling discouraged. But over the years I learned that with a little creative thinking and openness the two worlds can collide. And when they do, it’s pretty amazing.

A busy moms guide to an active life style. Tips and tricks I've used for years to succeed!

Instead of figuring out how to balance each of my two worlds individually, I started looking for more ways to bring them together. Today I want to share with you some tried and true ways that have brought me success over the past several years.

5 Health Tips To Live By!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #EmergenCRecipes #CollectiveBias

Around this time every year my thoughts turn towards pursuing an active healthy life-style. It is a season for germs, a season for over indulging and like it or not, New Years goals are just around the corner. Taking the time to refocus now is something I never regret. Today I want to share with you 5 health tips to live by.

#1 Get enough sleep

Oh how the days are long. I always feel so much better when I am well rested. I know it is hard getting to bed on time. To help I closely monitor what time I need to wake up and make it my goal to be in bed early enough to get at least 7 hours of rest.

#2 Exercise regularly

I always feel better when I exercise. I love having a routine, knowing I am growing stronger, and it helps improve my mood too.

EmergenC9

#3 Drink more water

Staying hydrated is just as important in the fall & winter months as it is in the summer. It is easy to forget this and try to hydrate yourself off of coffee, never a good plan. Set goals or alarms to remind you to get your suggested intake.

#4 Cut out stress

The effects of stress can be exhausting mentally and physically. Keep a close watch on your schedule making sure that you don’t cram too much in. A lot of stress comes from time management issues and all too often we are our own worst enemy. Say no more and cut out any unnecessary stress.

#5 Take my vitamins

A few weeks ago at the Dr. they asked me if I was taking any vitamins. a sense of shame fell upon me as I answered them with a no. I knew something needed to change.

emergen-c-walmart

I always feel better when I take my daily vitamins and one of my favorite products is Emergen-C. With 1,000 mg of vitamin C, electrolytes, and 7 B vitamins. It’s the perfect way to start my day. I recently grabbed a box at my local Wal-Mart, stocking up for cold and flu-season. I have been taking it daily for over a week now and I can tell it makes all the difference.

berry-boost-fruit-smoothie

I even got creative with how to enjoy my daily dose of Emergen-C. This Berry Boost smoothie is the perfect way to start my day.

Monthly Goals, July 2016

The year is halfway over.

Did you really let that sink in?
Halfway over!

We are only 4 short months from me going full-blown crazy Christmas and putting up my 6 Christmas trees? … I think it’s 6, I forgot exactly how many I own but needless to say, it’s a lot. The Fourth is over, school starts in just over a month, and I am definitely feeling some sort of denial about how fast the year is going by.

Why must time pass so quickly?

July Goals
Like it or not, time flies.

With the end of one month comes the beginning of a new one.
That means it is once again time to look back on my goals.

June

Blog-
*Keep posting 4-5 days a week.
*Post one photo a day to Instagram and grow to 1600 followers
*Reformat 25 blog posts since my WordPress transition.

Posts were written, IG followers are sitting around 1630 but the post reformat… yeah I might as well hang that up until summer is over. Do you want to know how many I did? One. Yup, just one single post #pathetic.

June goals 2
Family-
*Celebrate Marissa’s 8th birthday
*Go swimming as a family
*Try something new together

Marissa had an amazing 8th birthday, We went swimming together twice and as for trying something new, we recently started taking family bike rides. We’ve been going about 3 miles at a time and the girls are doing so awesome. I can’t wait until we can go even further.

June goals 1

Fitness-
*Pick a new event to train for this fall
*4-5 workouts a week
*Kids Classic 2016 for the girls

I found an event I am really interested in, a duathalon, but I have yet to register for it. I also logged 17 workouts so I can check that off my list. Then I dropped the bomb. I wrote the wrong day for the Kids Classic on my calendar. I assumed it was on Sunday since it is always on a Sunday. Not this year. By the time I realized that, it was over. I am so thankful my girls didn’t cry when I told them what I did.

June goals 6
Spiritual-
* Summer morning devotions with girls
* Read a book of the Bible
* Attend VBS

I have been working through and ABC devotional book that my MIL gave us in the mornings and I read through Ephesians. VBS was loved by all, which is exactly what I expected. I think they are already counting the weeks until next year.

June goals 4
Home School-
* Continue lesson planning for 2016/2017
* Shop for some used curriculum that I still need
* Start lesson planning for the Co-op Kindergarten class I’ll be teaching

Lesson plans for next year are SO close to being done since I now have all of the curriculum I need (boy is it a big stack). Anna and I have decided on a plan for next years co-op class. We just have a few more things to put together before I begin to share some details with you.

June goals 3
Random-
* Finish our spring bucket list
* Create & Start our summer bucket list
* Girls Night Out WITH Marissa
* Go to a cruise night
* Try a new recipe
* Swim lessons

Done, Done, Done, Done, Done and DONE!

Boy was I close to finishing everything this month. Maybe if I wouldn’t have bombed on the Kids Classic I would’ve reformatted those posts just to cross it all off. There is always next month I suppose.

June goals 5

Tangerine Yogurt & Fruit Parfait Recipe

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again because every single time I do someone is surprised. I haven’t always been an active person. I started running in August of 2013 just a few months before I started this little corner of the blogging world. So if you took a close look around here, you wouldn’t really find any evidence of my previous life as a couch potato. Over the past 3 years I have learned that living an active lifestyle is hard work, but work that is so worth it. I have also learned that there are countless ways to make good choices to benefit your health and today I want to share with you a favorite product of mine and a tasty way to use it.

A simple and refreshing tangerine yogurt parfait featuring Emergen-C with fresh fruit, coconut, & almonds.
My love for this product goes way, WAY back. I have been picking up Emergen-C for years now. I stumbled across it in the vitamin aisle on a whim one day and have been a fan ever since. When I noticed we were running low the other day knew it was time to pick some more up. It’s became a part of my routine that I just don’t want to miss.

We keep Emergen-C on hand year round at the Newman house. 1,000 mg of vitamin C, electrolytes, and 7 B vitamins. It’s the perfect way to start my day. For years I have been drinking Emergen-C mixed with water but recently I became a bit more adventurous and the results were too good not to share.

emergenC8
I created this yogurt parfait recipe featuring Emergen-C, Greek yogurt, honey, fresh berries, toasted coconut, & almonds. It was cool, refreshing, and the perfect way to recharge after an evening run, bike ride with the kids or my morning sweat session at the gym. It almost tastes like sherbet but the flavors were even better and I had absolutely no guilt eating it. It’s the little things.

Monthly Goals, June 2016

Just like that, May is over.

June Goals
And what a month May was! It was our first month of no school. That alone seems crazy. Have we really been out of school for a month already?! We went to a NASCAR race, ran a half marathon and spent a weekend out-of-town. May felt a bit like a whirlwind to say the least. With the busyness the past month brough,t it didn’t leave much time for working on the goals I set. Let’s see how thing went anyways.

 May

Blog-
*Keep posting 4-5 days a week.
*Work on my Pinterest strategy and growing followers to 1,000. (Take two)
*Reformat 50 blog posts since my WordPress transition.

I was WAY to ambitious on that reformat goal. I managed to do about 25 and sure there were days *cough* weeks *cough* that I didn’t do any at all. But hey, its pretty much summer. I’ll get them all done in… about 2 years.

When I wrote this I had 1,050 followers on Pinterest. So unless I have a massive un-following I seriously kicked that goals butt buy gaining 103 followers this month.

May Blog
Family-
*Go to a car show.
*Family milk shake or donut date
*Do something spontaneous?!

Done, done and done. I say deciding to go to a baseball games an hour before it starts and running a half marathon with little to no training are spontaneous enough!

May Family

Fitness-
*Complete half marathon #5
*4-5 workouts a week.
*Get diet in strict check this month.

The race is over. My workouts have been going great, but I wouldn’t call my diet strict. Better, but not strict.

May Fitness

Spiritual-
*”Summer” morning devotions with girls.

And now is when you hear the massive explosion of failure go off. Mornings have been totally unorganized around here. I have to get a grip on this one folks.

May spiritual

Home School-
* Start lesson planning for 2016/2017
* Shop for some used curriculum that I need

Lesson plans are underway, more on that later this week. I also have almost everything I need for school next year. I have about 4 more books I need to gather and I am praying I can find some of those used too.

May homeschool
Random-
*Work on our spring bucket list
*Date night.
*Get out of town
*Two Girls Nights

I’m a bit shocked that all of these happened, but they did! Our spring bucket list has 4 things left on it and hopefully we’ll cross a couple more of those off this week. I really think we could actually finish the whole list by the weekend with a little bit of luck.

May Random
All in all May went a lot better than I expected it to. I really missed the mark in some areas but did pretty well in others. Now to set some new goals for the month of June. It took every thing I had to not just stop with go to the pool.

June

Joplin Memorial Half {2016}

It was the race I wasn’t supposed to run.
After last years JMR I swore off running it again in 2016. I said “I was done running long distances” I really should learn to keep my mouth shut. I am pretty sure I will never be done running long distances, I just can’t seem to quit.

So I signed up on New Years Eve and ended up training about half as much as I normally would to run a race. With about 10 days until the race and a sponsored entry Russ joined the fun too. Boy was I SO glad that I had already signed up to do the race this year and would now be running Russ’ first half with him.

It started the same way it does every year.

And 161 balloons released followed by 161 seconds of silence for the 161 lives lost on May 22nd, 2011. Every year I stand there and think of just how beautiful this moment is. This truly is a day to run & remember.

JMRO 9
Think of this photo as a game of Where’s Waldo and see if you can find us :).

Before I knew it, we were off! I think it went something like this. run, run, run, run RUN! The course for 2016 was a brand new and oh goodness was it the best JMR course so far. It was fantastic. It wasn’t “flat as a pancake” but it was the perfect course through Joplin and followed roads that I run on a usual basis. I felt pretty at home on the course.

13288094_10209834141478170_1066235709_o 13262623_10209834140958157_325997382_o

And we even held hands for a minute walking up this hill.
Sneaky Anna caught a photo and I am so glad she did.

The weather was perfect, the hydration stations were incredible, my feet were EXHAUSTED and Anna endured what we will forever call “The epic side cramp of 2016” but we did it, we finished.

I couldn’t possibly be any happier with our results and this guy for running it with pretty much no training. I set out just wanting to finish the race and put up a pretty respectable time for me. Russ was a little disheartened to have lost to me by 5 seconds, but then he gloated that he ran his first half faster than I ran mine.

And to have yet another race in the books with this lady. They are getting almost to many to number now.

So that leaves me with the question I always am thinking about this time of the year.
What next?

For the very first times I’m not quite sure how to answer that.
But I am pretty sure I can say one thing…
It will likely involve running

See you next year Joplin Memorial Run!
