Fall Family Photos 2017

So many families are good about taking family photos every single year, sadly we are not one of them. It’s not that I don’t want the photos, (Because if you really know me, you should know how much I LOVE photos.) but it has been more of a budget/cost thing. The least thing I have wanted to do is to spend “big bucks” for a limited amount of photos, that I may not love, when I have a perfectly capable camera in my very own hands.

Usually every other year I realize the photos really need updated, suck it up and book an appointment. But this year we chose to go another route. Instead of paying someone to take photos for us, we decided to trade with a friend. I’d take pictures of her family, she’d take them of mine. Worst case scenario they don’t turn out and neither of us lose a thing.

We picked a day, picked outfits and met on a Sunday for family photo shoots. I took the photos of mine that I could, she did hers and we took photos for the other person as well. It was perfection. We both got some really great shots and it only cost our time.

Here are a few of my favorites

We even snapped a couple group shots too.

All in all I think we both got the exact photos we wanted. Sure it was a little hectic, but aren’t photos always that way?! We have already talked about doing another swap in the spring. I’d love to work on getting some great candid shots when we do that.

My main goal was to find the perfect photo for our 2017 Christmas card and with so many good options, I don’t think that will be a problem.

Have you ever considered photo swapping?

Not only are these photos fabulous ( I mean come on….model gorgeous subjects!) but what a brilliant idea! You all look so happy and content and it looks like you got a gorgeous day to take these on!

    • Aaahhhh!!! Thank you so much sweet friend. It was an AMAZING day when we took these…. unlike today. UGH!

  • Jenny v.

Great idea – they turned out so good!

    • I couldn’t of been happier with how they worked out. Thank you!

  • what beautiful shots!!!! And a great idea when you have mad skillz like you guys 🙂

    • Haha! Oh goodness, I don’t know about that. But, they definitely could’ve been worse.

  • Lizzie Simantz

These turned out amazing Beth!!!! I love them all!! Such a great idea to swap!

    • Thank you so much Lizzie. We were both so happy that it worked out alright.

  • They came out great! I wish I had a friend to swap photos with!

    • I wish you did too friend. It was such a great way to save money and get photos.

  • Beth!!! I love them so much!!! I totally want to do something similar with one of my friends!! May I ask what time you took the photos? The lighting is great!! I already have an area I think would be great for photos. 🙂

    • I hope you can find someone! We took them in the evening, which explains the lighting. We really could’ve started a bit sooner. Some of the ones we took in another location are a bit grainy. I hope you find someone to swap with!

  • Amy Smith

Beth! These turnes out great! I wish little Abigail was able to get in the pic with the big kids! We swapped with friends last year & it worked out great!

    • I thought about that after too! Could’ve plopped her in the middle or had them hold her hands. We were really running out of light at that point. Swapping is such a fun way to save money!

  • I think they turned out fantastic and you probably made some great memories doing it. Love the fall colours!

    • YES! We certainly did. Love our framily. Funny thing is the leaves started turning REALLY pretty about a week after we took these, lololol. OH well.

  • Such a great idea, Beth! Your pics turned out great! It’s crazy expensive to hire a photographer for yearly pictures – I didn’t even pay those prices for my wedding. Ha!

    • Right?! I dont understand how some people do it. I mean, I want the memories…. but not at that price! Ha!!!

  • What fabulous family photos. Your daughters are adorable. With all the advances in camera technology today, I think it’s completely unnecessary to hire a professional photographer.

    • YES! I am 100% behind you on those thoughts. Thank you so much Amy.

  • Beth, these are AMAZING. I would have never known that you didn’t pay a professional if you had never said anything. On a side note, WHERE OH WHERE did you get that top?! Momma needs!

    • Ha! I’ll give you one guess… it rhymes with Shmarget. BUT, I bought it last year. Whomp, whomp, whomp.

  • Momma Bear Life

What a beautiful family! I’m the same way, thinking why should we pay for photos when we have a perfectly good camera that can take perfectly good pictures. But then I see a shoot like this and I’m like aw, I want family photos like that!

    • Yes! It is crazy to spend tons of money. I used to set a timer but swapping with a friend worked out SO much better. I hope you get some good ones soon.

  • What a great idea! They turned out FANTASTIC! We took ours back in September, I just ordered our Christmas cards, Shutterfly is having a 50% off sale that ends today! So hop on it lady! hehe

    • Oh man. I am seriously debating on skipping the cards this year…. I probably won’t but I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit the thought has crossed my mind more than once.

  • This is like the BEST idea ever! I desperately want family photos. But the thought of spending so much on pictures and then the boys not cooperating (because they are toddlers, why would they cooperate?) makes me not want to do it! Now I’m off to find a friend to swap with!!!

    • Thank you so much! And #truth girl. Preach that all day long because it is just the way it goes. I hope you find a friend and the stars all align to get a good shot.

  • Mother of 3

Such wonderful family photos! i am always taking pictures of my boys and family but was just saying the other day that we NEED a new family photo. The last one we took showed up on my Facebook timeline the other day and I’m pretty sure my oldest was younger than my youngest boy is now. For us it was always the cost factor too; I just could not justify spending hundreds of dollars for what amounted to one nice photo to hang on the wall and share with family. This is a great idea.

    • Lololol! Oh man I am so glad we aren’t the only ones who delay the family photos. I hope you find someone to swap with and get some great photos!

  • These are perfect! Love saving $ on photos!

    • Because I have way better things to spend my money on! :).

  • Whitney Jordan

Such amazing pictures!! I can just picture these framed in your new house. Love the backgrounds, love the smiles and love the outfits you chose. Glad it all went so well and I love your idea to trade photography skills with a friend!

    • Oh that is such a lovely thought. By then we may need new updated photos though, lol! Thank you so much Whitney. I was really pleased with the outfits and such.

  • These turned out awesome! I NEED photos so bad, why can’t you live closer?? I would be a good swap buddy 🙂

    • You would be SO much fun. Maybe my kids would legit smile too.

  • My mom takes our Christmas card pictures every year! Free & completely comfortable atmosphere, win-win-win! These look great!

    • That is so awesome! Can’t wait to see this years card friend.

  • Oh my gosh can we please talk about how ridiculously expensive photos are getting. I’m not sure how expensive they are in MO but in the Seattle area some photographers are charging $250 for a mini session – that’s only 15 minuets and 6-10 edited photos!!! I just can’t even! Thankfully I have a friend who is working on building her portfolio and she does our photos for us FOC!! I love your idea of swapping with a friend- genius.

    • That is CRAZY!!!! And you are a very lucky, lucky gal. You need to keep that friend close girl, lol. Swapping will definitely be something we repeat.

  • Such a great idea to trade with a friend. The past two years we’ve been able to snag a couple shots at family gatherings from my sister in law and it just makes it less stressful!

    • WAY less stressful for sure and you can’t beat free too! Trading was a lot of fun and it was so nice to save the money!

  • We are the worst at taking any kind of family picture, let alone a Christmas one. We have got to get some taken, though. You know…for Christmas cards! I love the idea of switching with a friend. I need to find someone to do that with. Your photos came out amazing. I am in love with them. This area is beautiful as well.

    • I think it is so funny how some of my friends who take the most photos, stink at getting family ones taken. I hope you find someone great to swap with friend.

  • Heather Bramlett

These turned out so GREAT! what a fun idea on photo swapping!

    • Thank you so much! It worked out really great and we will definitely swap again!
