We’re back again for another month of the Kids Summer Reading Club. If there is one thing Marissa has done this summer, it’s read. She’s read well over 50 books and completed all 4 levels of our libraries summer reading program, in less than 4 weeks, making her a “super reader”. Her love for books seems to always be growing and sometimes it is challenging to find her new things to read. She recently read the entire Never Girl series and loved it. She even carries a book inside her purse almost everywhere she goes. I joked with a friend that she is just like Rory Gilmore, and she doesn’t even know it. If her love of reading evolves to her picking up Tolstoy, I’ll know for sure.
We are feeling abundantly proud of our book work over here.
This month’s book was Because of Winn Dixie. Marissa was super excited about this book because it was about a dog. Some of her favorite books are about animals. It was a new to us story too. We’ve never read it or seen the movie for that matter. Speaking of, now that she has read it seeing the movie might be something fun to do! I should check Netflix or the library to see if either of them have it. It’s always fun to watch a movie after reading a book. I’m not a big fan of doing it the opposite way though.
A little Q&A about the book
1. What made you laugh in this book? Why?
When Winn Dixie swallowed an entire piece of candy. Because it was silly.
2. Why do you think it was easier for Opal to open up to Winn Dixie? Why?
Winn Dixie was a dog! Because a dog wouldn’t tell anyone what you say and would listen when you just need someone to talk to.
3. Do you think you’d like to eat a Littmus Lozenge? Why or why not?
No, because they make you feel sad and think about sad things.
4. What does the title ‘Because Winn Dixie’ mean to you?
Because of Winn Dixie, Opal made a whole bunch of friends.
5. Why do you think Opal wanted to know 10 things about her mother?
Because she didn’t know much about her mother and she was 10 years old.
6. What decisions does Opal make in the story that end up changing her life?
She told the manager at the grocery store that the stray dog was hers.
What have you been reading this summer?
