Kids Summer Reading Club, June 2017

We’re back again for another month of the Kids Summer Reading Club. If there is one thing Marissa has done this summer, it’s read. She’s read well over 50 books and completed all 4 levels of our libraries summer reading program, in less than 4 weeks, making her a “super reader”. Her love for books seems to always be growing and sometimes it is challenging to find her new things to read. She recently read the entire Never Girl series and loved it. She even carries a book inside her purse almost everywhere she goes. I joked with a friend that she is just like Rory Gilmore, and she doesn’t even know it. If her love of reading evolves to her picking up Tolstoy, I’ll know for sure.

We are feeling abundantly proud of our book work over here.

This month’s book was Because of Winn Dixie. Marissa was super excited about this book because it was about a dog. Some of her favorite books are about animals. It was a new to us story too. We’ve never read it or seen the movie for that matter. Speaking of, now that she has read it seeing the movie might be something fun to do! I should check Netflix or the library to see if either of them have it. It’s always fun to watch a movie after reading a book. I’m not a big fan of doing it the opposite way though.

A little Q&A about the book

1. What made you laugh in this book? Why?
When Winn Dixie swallowed an entire piece of candy. Because it was silly.

2. Why do you think it was easier for Opal to open up to Winn Dixie? Why?
Winn Dixie was a dog! Because a dog wouldn’t tell anyone what you say and would listen when you just need someone to talk to.

3. Do you think you’d like to eat a Littmus Lozenge? Why or why not?
No, because they make you feel sad and think about sad things.

4. What does the title ‘Because Winn Dixie’ mean to you?
Because of Winn Dixie, Opal made a whole bunch of friends.

5. Why do you think Opal wanted to know 10 things about her mother?
Because she didn’t know much about her mother and she was 10 years old.

6. What decisions does Opal make in the story that end up changing her life?
She told the manager at the grocery store that the stray dog was hers.

What have you been reading this summer?

Awww…I love your little book worm! My kiddos are heading toward the same thing and I’m so thankful!

    • It is pretty fantastic to have them so wrapped up in books.

  • Lizzie Simantz

Seriously I love how much Marissa loves to read, that is so so awesome!!

  • Thanks for linking up with us!!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

We did summer read challenge when the boys were younger and man, I wish I’d had that Q&A. Brilliant questions! Reading instilled young leads to a lifelong love of it!!! So awesome!!

    • Yes it does! We are doing our best to keep them loving it too. Big sister picked it up all on her own, but little sister isn’t as into it, yet. I am hoping it grows on her as she gains reading confidence.

  • Not going to lie, this book made me cry! And the movie adaptation is a great one.

    • I ALMOST read it too. Good to know that about the movie.

  • Very fun to read her answers to these!

  • My middle girl is cruising through Harry Potter this summer or I would have her read this. I watched the movie a few years ago with her older sister and she loved it. I wonder how it compares to the book?

    • Oh that is SO much fun. My girls have never really gotten into those books. Maybe someday!

  • Dang- I wish my kids were flopped in ages- I could be getting some great suggestions for future Lucia. I love having little readers!

    • Well I think Lucia is a bit older than Emily so we’ll circle back around to all of this after a few years, lol.

  • I need to have Lexie check this one out! She’s currently reading a Beverly Cleary book and Dylan is reading A Wrinkle in Time.

    • Marissa had LOVED reading Beverly Cleary books and that makes me so happy since I loved reading them too!

  • I love Marissa’s answers. Thanks so much for linking up with us! We are on the hunt to find the movie to watch too! Way to go Marissa for reading so many books this summer!

    • Thanks friend. The link up has been so much fun. Not sure if we’ll join in next month, it depends on if I can track down the book!

  • I love that she is a little bookworm!! 🙂

  • Whitney Jordan

I love this book and most things by Kate DiCamillo! Marissa’s answers are so sweet and thoughtful. Glad she loves books – no wonder you’re at the library all the time. Has she ever read any of the Roald Dahl classics?

    • We have not, but we’ll be sure to check them out. She really will read just about anything. She doesn’t seem to have much of a genre preference, which is nice.
