What’s Up Wednesday, January 2017

The holidays are long gone, we are nearly a whole month into 2017, and I feel like life is finally starting to level out a bit. For the first part of the month I couldn’t get a grasp on it actually being 2017. Now, I am starting to feel like this year is going to fly by.

Today I want to share what’s up with the Newman’s, giving you a little peek into our life currently.

What's Up Wednesday

What we are eating this week…
Well, this isn’t exactly a normal week for us so don’t judge, m’kay?

Monday: Dinner Out
Tuesday: Homemade Pizza
Wednesday: Soup
Thursday: Home group meal
Friday: Russ’ lasagna birthday dinner
Saturday: Tamale Pie
Sunday: Lasagna leftovers

What I’m reminiscing about…
Memories of grandpa John. I may not of know him super well, but he definitely had a place in my heart. Russ and I were recently talking about how silly the girls thought he was the last time we were up there. “Oh mama, he’s so silly.” He was an amazing man of God and will be greatly missed here on earth.

What I’m loving…
Lately I cannot get enough of Target. The girls and I have been making weekly trips there just to browse the store and escape home for a bit. We go on a weekday in the afternoon and almost have the store to ourselves. It has also been a GREAT mental/financial exercise at keeping self-control. Because I really just want to buy ALL the things.

What we’ve been up to…
Trying to adjust to the new year. I feel like we are just really getting our fee under us. Life lately has been pretty uneventful but I am okay with that. Staying home means fewer opportunities to pickup unwanted germs. Yup, I’m a total germaphobe.

What I’m dreading…
Picking out curriculum for the next school year. Sadly it is getting close to the time that I already start thinking about that. Crazy, right?! I have an idea of the direction I want to go, It’s just a whole lot of work and research to piece it all together.

What I’m working on…
Trying to stay on top of the budget. I am SO bad about keeping a really close eye on it the first week of the month, then forgetting it until the very end. All this does is create a whole lot of work for me and I usually complain via text messages to Anna and/or Stephanie. Sorry ladies. I’m working on it.

What I’m excited about…
Is it to soon to say spring break? That doesn’t happen until sometime in March but I am already SO excited. The girls and I have never taken a technical spring break so it is something we are all looking forward to. I am hoping to have all my blog work caught up so I can “disappear” for a week.

What I’m watching/reading…
We aren’t really deep into anything right now. Russ has been watching lots of off grid living videos (like that’s ever going to happen) and I have been watching This Is Us (because it is amazing). When we watch TV together it has either been a movie or an episode of Last Man Standing. That show is cracking me up because Tim Allen’s character is SO much like Russ.

What I’m listening to…
This song on repeat all the live long day. In fact, I am listening to it right now!

Even when the morning comes
I’ll praise you
Even when the fight is won
I’ll praise you
Even when my time on earth is done
Louder then I’ll sing your praise

What I’m wearing…
All of my favorite winter accessories. Vests, boots, scarves, my beloved poncho…. plus leggings, hoodies, and fleece pants. Because, #momlife.

What I’m doing this weekend…
Celebrating Russ’ 37th birthday. We don’t exactly have any big plans made but there will be laughing, fun, and some kind of dessert. That’s all that really matters, right? I can’t believe this will be his 10th birthday that we celebrate together. Seems like yesterday.

What I’m looking forward to next month…
Valentines, Emily’s 6th birthday, my MIL’s birthday, and Marissa is competing in an out-of-town Bible quiz team event! February has shaped up to be a pretty busy month for our family. Hopefully we’ll even get a little bit of snow too!

What else is new…
I got a new wide-angle lens for the camera a few weeks back that I am loving. It makes me want to take new home-tour photos. Maybe that is something I can work on come spring?!

What’s up with you lately?
  • Jessica

I love hearing what’s going on with other families. It’s fun to see what is similar and different. You guys will have a fun February. It sounds like it’ll be busy, but pretty great. Can’t wait to read all about it.

    • February is packed full, especially for a short month. I actually forgot to add some things to the list of what’s going on :D!

  • A wide angle lens, how exciting! That (and a macro) lens are on a list of things I want to buy when we have money. I looked up a macro lens the other day, then laughed. It was like $400. I’ll just keep using my lens covers… they work just fine.

    • Lol! Macro Lens’ are insane. I doubt I would ever buy one either.

  • Yes stay away from those germs! Totally get that. We have been washing our hands like crazy over her. Can’t wait to see the new pics with your new lens

    • Ain’t nobody got time to be sick. Sigh, still so bummed you were sick friend.

  • Lizzie Simantz

Oh my gosh, we LOVE last man standing too, me and Rick literally laugh out loud when we watch it! He reminds me of my hubby too but more so my father in law, to a t!

I’m also pretty bad with the budget in the same way, in the beginning of the month, I’m all like yeah we have money to spend, then the last week it’s like oh sh*t, we have no money

    • It is the funniest show. I can’t believe it took us this long to watch it!

Oh man I laughed so hard. YES, I do that too. I’m scared to look.

  • Happy Birthday to Russ! I thought about getting a wide angle lens – which one is it?

  • I’m loving this is us!! And Last Man Standing is hilarious!

  • Oh how I’m loving This is Us! Last night..eek! I usually don’t watch it real time but after catching up on Monday night from the week before I was so dying to watch it. Hmm…will love to see about the wide angle lens.

    • Watching it real time is the worst because the commercials are SO long, but I do it every single week. #1 We don’t have a DVR #2 I have claimed that hour as mine and won’t give it up, HA!

  • Spring Break for us is the week following Easter and I am ready! Well I am mentally ready! This Is Us – just caught up on last night’s episode. That show! Happy birthday to your husband and woo hoo for the competition for your sweet girl.

    • I THINK that is the same week I was looking at taking for us too. I’ll have to double check my calendar first though. Thank you, thank you! We are excited for both.

  • Next month is crazy for us too. I feel like life is just too busy and it’s rushing by. Makes me a bit blue.

    • Oh man me too. I don’t even want to think about next month. Its short already and we have SO stinking much to do.

  • Yes for new home tour photos! I would love to see more! I just can’t get enough of the home tours!

    • Haha! Eventually I will deliver on that. You don’t want to see this place right now :P.

  • Last Man Standing is the best! Tim Allen is the best. That is all. February is coming up so fast! Our babies are growing up.

    • February is coming fast and it is SO dang full. We gotta slow things down friend.

  • I am so sorry for your family’s loss and then to have a birthday right after, that’s tough. Hugs to you and your sweet family.

    • Thank you so much Jen. You totally get it, celebrations will be pretty laid back this year.

  • Sorry to hear about your grandfather. I’m glad he gave you a great legacy to remember him through.
I need to spend some time exploring Target. I have a gift card from Christmas burning a hole in my pocket. I’m thinking about new lamps for the living room…but who knows, I may spend it all on nail polish & tank tops this spring!!

    • Oh goodness Emily I could go on for HOURS about that man. He was AMAZING. Lol both would be fantastic options in my opinion :).

  • So sorry for your family’s loss. I am still writing 2016 on my calendar at school for journals and such and the students always call me out. Hahaha! I tell them that I won’t know what year it is until next October. Also, way to go for being able to walk around Target and not buy all the things. That would be so hard for me. I don’t know if I could do that. Have a great day!

    • Thank you.

Lol I think this is the first year I haven’t done that, watch I will today. Our weekly trips to Target are so hard but I usually pull through. Yesterday we left and only spent $3. I call that a win!

  • Meghan Flinn

I don’t know how you go to target on a weekly basis and not blow your budget! I’m so bad with impulse buys when I do go!!! And your meal plan for the week sounds great… not sure why there’d be any judgment for it 🙂

    • I honestly don’t know either. It seems I am doing the impossible. That meal plan ended up being a total bust too. I got home from STL and have barely made it to the store. You know those obnoxious small trips to survive for a day or two. We are going to HAVE to shop on Sunday.

  • Whitney Jordan

I’m so glad you’re taking a spring break this year! I’m sure it’ll be a fun week with the girls. March will be here before we know it. Looks like you’ve got a lot to look forward to in February. Yay for the Target trips and I’m sorry for your loss.

    • Oh me too! It really will be here soon too. February is packed! Thanks friend.

  • I’m so with you on the loving it that we avoid the extra germs when we’re able to stay in and cozy during these cold winter days! One of the many benefits of homeschooling that this germaphobe also loves! 😉 Enjoy celebrating your husband’s Special Day this weekend! Continuing to pray for your precious family this week. xo – Brenda // ChattingOverChocolate.com

    • I mean for real?! The germs are going to find their way to us I am sure, but the fewer chances, the better. Thank you so much.

  • Such a fun update. If I made a weekly trip to Target my budget would tank! Great job with the self-control!!

    • It is so funny how everyone is saying that. I guess I have never minded window shopping. Thank you!

  • I love these kinds of updates! You are some kind of superhero to stay on budget with those Target trips, friend! I love that Hillsong song!

    • Isn’t that song just the best. I want to listen to it ALL the time.

  • I love these updates, yay for taking a Spring Break! Oh Target how I love thee!

    • How I love thee, let me count the ways :P.
