Our Favorite Christmas Books

For the past 4 years I have wrapped 25 books and gave them to the girls one at a time as a December book Advent… until this year. It’s hard to let a tradition go, but eventually you outgrow them and I am learning (slowly) that it’s okay. Instead of wrapping the books this year, (which I didn’t miss one little bit) I put them out for the girls to enjoy the whole month.

Our favorite Christmas books, not the average list.

Since they are both reading now, they get far more out of this new approach than unwrapping one book a day. Our books are a mix of board books, story books, whimsical stories, and several that speak of what Christmas is really all about. Some of them we have grown out of, others we have grown into. Today I want to share with you a few of our favorites hoping they’ll become favorites of yours too.

Our favorite Christmas books, not the average list.
Mortimer’s Christmas Manger / The First Christmas / The Mouse Before Christmas / Olive, the Other Reindeer / The Christmas Lizard / Llama Llama Holiday Drama / Room for a Little One / Christmas Stories for Bedtime / My Christmas Gift to Jesus / The Biggest Snowman Ever / The Polar Express / The Gift Giver

I tried wrapping our books to use them as an advent, but I decided that since we have so many favorites and Cam wanted to read certain ones that we have more fun having them all out to read whenever. We have so many Christmas books they take up two buckets and I think we’ve read about all of them at least once or more. Ha ha!!

    • Yes, totally agree! The advent thing is really fun, but we enjoy our books more having them all at once.

First, so funny because my post today is on the same thing – great minds think alike πŸ™‚ Second, I haven’t heard of some of these so I need to check them out! I love that you did 25 books each year, I had high hopes to do that in years passed but never got around to it. Now I do 1 book for each kid LOL

    • Great minds friend! A lot of our books are really different from others so I had to share our list! And I don’t buy new books every year either :P. I do good to pick up one new one each year.

  • Thanks for the party and happy holidays!

  • So many good options…. I have llama llama holi-drama– I love those books and I was saddened when the author passed away!

I feel like we have so many Christmas books, but you listed so many that we do not have. I can’t wait to add some more to our list. Thanks for sharing!

    • We have some really great Jesus centered books that I know you would love. Definitely check out Mortimers Christmas Manger and The Christmas Lizzard.

  • We have a ton of Christmas books, and somehow, we don’t have any of these except for The Polar Express! I need to put these in my wish list for next year!

    • Our list is really different from so many others. We don’t have a lot of the classics but we do have some really awesome Christ centered books.

  • Great list, Beth! We have some of these but we always ‘need’ more! πŸ˜‰

    • Me too friend, I need ALL the Christmas books.

  • I am going to save this for reference next year when we outgrow the younger books we have. It won’t be too long before we need legit big kid books πŸ™

    • Yes! A lot of these we definitely had to grow into, but now love.

We wrapped them this year but Noah said next year he’d prefer them just to be numbered (he really does love order lol). We too are slowly outgrowing some of the baby books and adding to our collection slowly each year. Thanks for some new suggestions!

    • Lol! He sounds just like Marissa. Wrapping them is fun, but having them free to look at all month long makes them more enjoyable. Especially those last few!

  • The Polar Express is a must, the Night Before Christmas, All of the Jan Brett Books (like the Christmas Reindeer or the Mitten). Did you do the same books each year? Or get new ones?

    • I use the same ones every year. I actually haven’t bought a new one for quite a while…. ooopppss!!!!

  • Whitney Jordan

So many good ones!! I’m glad you know about Mortimer, too. That’s one of our favorite Christmas books. Olive always looks at our gingerbread house and says Mortimer could live there. We also love Llama Llama and Olive the other Reindeer. You’ve also given me some to wish for – Bedtime Christmas stories and the Mouse Before Christmas look cute. I love that you leave the books out all month long for the girls to enjoy now. Can you believe you have two readers!?!? Way to go πŸ™‚

    • I can’t believe it! That bedtime one is SO cute. It is almost like a little devotional to do with them every day. It is super short and very sweet. My MIL gave it to us. We also love The Christmas Lizard a lot. It is similar to Mortimer, but totally different too.
