As hard as this is for me to say, back to school season is here. The time to hang up the beach towels is getting closer and I find myself thinking more and more about the soon to arrive school year. There is so much to plan and prepare to ensure we are ready.

One of my priorities is our school room. As a homeschool mom I have had a lot of practice setting up desks. From kitchen table learning to permanent desks, we’ve done it all. Today I want to share how you can affordably put together a homework command center to keep you organized through the year.

1. Location, Location, Location

Location is everything. Find a spot that is close to the center of the home, but not overly distracting either. Somewhere near the kitchen is always convenient. If you don’t have an area where you can permanently set up a desk. The kitchen table has worked well for years and I have a special tip for you at the end of this post.

2. Things to Remember

A great way to remember things is to see them. An organized center will always have a calendar hanging to write down important dates and an area to hang up reminders and even accomplishments too. When things are in front of your face every day you are a lot more likely to remember them. But just in case, write them in your family planner or set a reminder on you cell phone.

3. A paper for everything

Keeping a large variety of papers on hand and organized makes doing any project simple. From notebook paper, printer paper, card stock, construction, index cards and more. We keep a little bit of everything around.

4. Organized supplies

Have you ever tried to work on a project but you can’t find a single tool that you need to get the job done? It is frustrating, right? Homework isn’t and different. Have supplies organized and easy to find. The least thing you wan to do is waste 30 minutes of home work time looking for an eraser.

HP ContainersContainers like these can be purchased for about $1 a piece and are perfect for keeping essential organized.

5. Lighting Matters

Check the lighting in the area you have chosen. Make sure it is adequate at all times of the day. If not you can purchase a small desk lamp for around $5. to help brighten up the spot, reducing eye strain and headaches.

6. Have a great printer

Printers are an absolute must for a homework command center. Your best option is an affordable all-in-one you can count on. I recently picked up the all new HP Deskjet 3636 at Walmart and I am in printer love. I didn’t even know that was possible.

I can now print from my smart phone or tablet,  something I have never been able to do. I can’t believe I lived without this feature for this long. So often I find something while on my cell phone that I would like to be able to print right away, now I can.

HP CellWith the HP Deskjet 3636 mobile printing is made easy. You can connect your smart phone or tablet directly to your printer and easily print without accessing a network. I also downloaded the free HP All-in-One Printer Remote mobile app so I can manage printing tasks and scan on the go.

Another thing I love about this printer is that it comes with choices. What’s your color this back to school? This affordable AiO that comes in 3 cool colors – Vibrant Red, Dragonfly Blue, Sporty Purple. I knew my girls would love the purple and I have to admit, I am a huge fan of it too. It adds the perfect pop of color to our work space.

Not only does this printer come with an affordable price tag and all of the features I need, it gives me high-quality printing and up to twice as many pages with Original HP high-yield ink cartridges, helping to stretch the budget even further.

I can also access coloring pages, recipes, coupons and more with free HP Printables that are delivered on my schedule.

Let’s review
An organized space has…

An organized space has

*A great, well-lit, location with supplies that are organized and accessible.
*There is a board to display reminders, achievements, and a calendar to keep us on track
*And the space isn’t complete without an amazing AIO HP printer.

These are great tips! Tell me, is that a Lisa Frank calendar??

    • It is! Isn’t that awesome! I saw it and HAD to get it for her because hello, this stuff was the best in the early 90’s. Marissa loves animals and seems to like the fun colors and photos.

  • Jessica

Love these tips! I’m gonna sound like a huge nerd, but I look forward to creating a homework center in a few years when my kiddos start school. πŸ™‚

    • You don’t sound like a nerd at all and I KNOW you will put together something completely amazing because you are super thoughtful like that.

  • I totally need a wireless printer! Love this center!

    • Wireless is AMAZING. I can print from my bed all the way to the school room. This printer also has a quiet mode too. But the mobile feature brought it all up another notch. I am head over heels for this printer. I know, it sounds crazy but I think if anyone could understand, it would be a teacher.

  • You have a great space set up! I love that the printer comes in different colors (I would pick purple too) and the wireless feature sounds awesome! Our printer is wireless and it’s so slick to print from my computer in a different room. I haven’t set my phone up yet…that would be even better. πŸ˜‰

    • The purple is just so pretty. The phone feature was something I always wanted but the printer I replaced just couldn’t do. Now when I find something on my cell I don’t have to try and remember to find it again later. I am loving that option.

  • That cart is the best. I love it in our bathroom. When we move (one day!), I’m going to get more and pretty much have them in every room of the house πŸ™‚

Oh and I love your classroom. It makes my OCD heart happy with all the organization.

    • Baha ha! Yes. I would like to have at least 3 more of them.

  • I love that cart! Our command center is in our kitchen and we leave our homework caddy set up on the kitchen counter all year long. It gets used even when school is out for the Summer! I will have to check out that printer. Our wireless one broke last year and I never replaced it!

    • You totally should replace it. This one is pretty fantastic and the phone features make me so happy. You might be a nerd when a printer makes you this happy.

  • I have that printer too but not in pretty colours. Hmmph. Love the work corner!

  • chall1018

As much as I am not ready for school to start, I do love this post. I get so giddy when it comes to new school (or office) supplies and getting organized. We have somewhat of a homework station, but it could use some sprucing up. Wait, a printer that you can print from using your phone? I need one asap! How is the quality of the prints? Your space looks great and I agree, the purple was a fantastic choice!

    • I heart organization too. It took me FOREVER to clean out the room and reset it all up though. Even I was feeling a bit over it. The printer is amazing and seems to have really great quality too. I haven’t printed anything super detailed yet though.

  • I adore your graphic, those bright colors speak to my heart! I may be in denial about homework haha. I really want that Ikea cart! And how cool is that printer? Too bad we already bought one from Walmart at the beginning of the year πŸ˜‰

    • Lol! That cart is the best. I want like 4 more of them, seriously. You just have to get one at some point.

  • Looks like you are all ready to get started! Love that cart.

    • Thanks Shelly we are all ready for Monday :(. I should be happy but I’m not there yet.

  • Meghan Flinn

I love this! Your homework station is perfect! And that printer looks great! I would choose purple too and would love to have the option to print from my phone.

    • The phone option is fantastic. There are so many times I just want to print something without having to look it up again later and now I can.

  • Courtney Patterson

With Maddy starting kindergarten this fall, and it being her first time to bring home homework, I have to admit I was feeling some anxiety about how to manage it all but this definitely helps! Lots of great ideas here for me to get and stay organized with homework – thank you!!

    • You are so welcome. Maddy is totally going to rock Kindergarten. Speaking of Kindergarten. Em is getting her shots today, ACK!

  • That Lisa Frank calendar is SO beautiful and totally takes me back to the glorious 90’s! I have an HP printer for my home office and I love it. Totally agree about being able to print from your phone – I love that app!

Whitney @ Come Home For Comfort

    • IKR?! I totally picked it out for her, I am just glad she loves it. The app and my printer having its own email address. This is the kind of technology I love.

  • We do our homework at the kitchen table and it leaves such a mess. Maybe I should do the cart idea!

    • You totally should there are so many ways to organize them and everything have a place is so helpful.

  • Sarah Elizabeth Frazer

LOVE this idea Beth. And I’ve been wanting to get a new printer…..so I might just order this one. Thanks for all the great tips! πŸ™‚

    • Definitely check this one out is is a lot of bang for your buck and so pretty to look at too :P.

  • Wow that a great well thoughout post! I loved the graphics and this is definitely something I’m gonig to have to put together when my kids get the homework thing…

    • Thank you so much Sarah! I have no doubts that you will put together an amazing space for them :).

  • What a gorgeous printer! Seriously! And I had no idea that any printer would allow you to print something from your phone. You have no idea how many times I’ve wished that I had this capability. I will definitely be looking into this for sure!

    • It really is pretty and sleek and looks SO much better in our school room than the old clunky black one I had. It is technology at its finest friend. I bought my last wireless printer before the phone printing was a thing. Making this switch has been amazing.

  • I’ve heard wonderful things about that printer…. I so need a new one!

    • It is pretty to look at and has pretty great features too. Definitely check it out.

  • You are my hero and that printer is so pretty! I love it.

Having a set and organized place to do homework really is important. My kids are less than successful when they try to lounge around on the couch and do their homework. I wonder why? πŸ™‚

    • Thanks friend. The printer is SO pretty It looks much nicer than our old and bulky one.

YES! I would add that I also fit into that category too.
