First Day of School {2016}

Last week our summer officially ended and we went back to school.

BTS8
I feel like I say it every day, all the time, but really…

How in the world are they getting this big?!

I sat down to edit these photos and I nearly choked up. I was looking at those little faces and the amount of growth just left me speechless. You know how every once in a while you can see a glimpse of the older version of your child in a photo. A small peek at what they may look like when they are several years older. That is how these photos feel, especially for Marissa. She is looking less and less like a little girl all the time.

BTS4
Marissa is a third grader this year.

She gets to learn about chemistry, finally study the life of Christ, move up a level in Awana, learn to write in cursive, and read all of the Little House on the Prairie books. She is 8 years and 2 months, 4′ 7.40″ tall and weighs 66 lbs, tall and skinny!

I asked her…

What are you most excited about this school year? //
Learning to write in cursive.

What are you least excited about? //
The speed drills and tests in math.

Is there anything you want to learn how to do that you can’t do now?
I want to learn how to do cartwheels.

Emily started Kindergarten this year.

She gets to learn about creation, really work on learning to read, start Awana, begin learning more about arithmetic, and learn more about the world around her. She is 5 years 6 months, 3′ 11″  and weighs 44 lbs, tall and really skinny.

I asked her…

What are you most excited about this school year? //
Making my little books.

What are you least excited about? //
I don’t have an answer for that. I love everything.

Is there anything you want to learn how to do that you can’t do now?
I want to learn how to spell words.

Another school year.
Another adventure with my girls.
Another time to be thankful for this home school life that we share and remember that it almost never even happened.

Take a look back at our other first day of school photos.

My goodness are your girls full of sweetness. Their beautiful smiles could light up a room. I love their answers to your questions and I agree that Marissa looks so grown up. Happy school year!

    • Others agreeing must mean its true… I am off to eat bon bons now :P. Thank you so much friend.

  • Lizzie Simantz

Oh my goodness your girls are so sweet!! I love that you asked them a few questions on their first day, I think I just might have to do that this year! Loved all the pictures, just precious!

    • You totally should it is such a fun way to remember how they started their year off. Thank you!

  • I love the “I don’t have an answer for that. I love everything.” So cute! Also, I totally wanted to be a vet. It wasn’t until I got to college and took the entry level biology class (and really struggled), that I realized it probably wasn’t for me.

    • Baha ha! I can totally see myself in that exact same place friend. biology 1, Beth 0 :P.

  • Amy Smith

Your girls are just beautiful! Marissa looks so old in the picture without the sign. I can’t get over it! I love how Emily is so excited for everything!

    • I know, right?! It seriously slays me. I love that about her too. She has such a fun personality.

  • Love them! I just realized that your girls are each a year younger than my boys. I think they’d get along! 🙂

    • Oh I bet they would get along perfectly. Maybe they can meet someday!

  • I want to read all the Little House on the Prairies books too!

    • I kind of want to reread them too! If only I had the time to read them with her. I have to spend the time she is reading to do other subjects with her sister :/.

  • I hope your adorable girls have a wonderful year! XOXO

  • I loved Little House on the Prairie books! Although the tv show is what I loved most and still watch it to this day if it’s on tv and I’m home 🙂 Good luck with the new school year!

    • Once I get her reading the books I totally plan to introduce the tv show :). Thank you!

  • Geez…they’re just the cutest! Hope they have a wonderful year!

Question for you – do you three get dressed for school every day? Or do you have pajama school days? Just curious! I work at home and in the summer time it’s so hard for me to get up and get dressed. But, I do feel so much better and feel more productive when I do. I agree, Marissa is looking so grown to me lately. She’s so tall and beautiful. I love that Emily wants to be a Mommy. That was always my answer, too! And can we talk about how awesome her shoes are? What a cutie! I hope you three have the best school year yet!

    • Lol, ummmm NO! Most days I go to the gym in the morning so I may or may not ever change out of my gym clothes but I don’t make the girls get dressed…for the most part.

It kind of pains me that others see Marissa looking older too. It must mean it’s true :(. Those shoes are the best, right?!

      Thank you so much friend,.

    Cute GIRLS! :0)

  • OH Beth, they are both such beautiful little ladies. I love love love that Emily wants to be a mommy when she grows up. That’s all I ever wanted to be, too. :o)

    • Thank you so much Lindsay. I love it too :).

  • They are just so precious! Third grade was one of my favorite years for Kendall. They’re learning independence, but are so sweet and still little! It’s pretty much down hill after third grade. Just kidding! 😉
I love that Emily wants to be a Mommy. That means you’re doing a great job because she wants to be like you!

    • Baha ha! Was that a #kiddingnotkidding comment. I am so excited for this year too.

      Thank you friend.

  • Beth! I love these girls something fierce. I can’t wait to see how the grow this school year.

    • I’m and emotional mess friend. I just read your comment and my eyes teared up. Thank you so much. I am excited (and nervous to watch them grow even more) about it too.

  • This is so dang precious! And I know EXACTLY what you mean about glimpses into the future. Crazy, wonderful and all.

    • And heartbreaking too :P. Thank you friend.

  • Your girls are adorable! I love how your have the printed posters of their grade and what they want to be when they grow up. This is such a good way to keep track of their yearly growth academically and socially. Love it!

    • Thank you! I have been doing this for years now and plan to keep on doing it as long as they let me :P.

  • Oh my goodness, seriously how cute are they!? I love their little signs! And I love Emily’s fashion sense with those sneakers. I can’t believe you have a kindergartener and a 3rd grader. The time is flying. I hope this is the best year yet!

    • Emily has the craziest fashion sense and I adore that about her. I can’t believe it either. When I started blogging I had a just turned 3 year old and a first grader! WHAT?!?! I hope so too!

  • Meghan Flinn

Your girls are looking so grown up! They are so beautiful, inside and out! I love all their answers. What is Awana? And omg is Emily skinny… She only weighs a few more pounds than Noah at 3 1/2!

    • It gives me chest pains Meghan, TOO fast girls, slow down. Awana is a christian based bible program. Kind of like boy or girls scouts but boys and girls attend and they memorize scriptures and what not. She seriously has bird bones friend that girl is LIGHT. Kind of nice that she is 5.5 and I can still easily hold her!

  • Whitney Jordan

You win the award for the cutest back to school pictures I’ve seen this year! Love your signs, love your sweet girls and love their answers. Third grade holds a special place in my heart… I loved everything about teaching it. The cursive, the novels, the writing, the math facts, etc. You two are going to have so much fun. Loved Emily’s answer of wanting to learn how to spell words. What a big year this will be for her. Good luck to you as their wonderful teacher mama!!

    • AAaaawww, thanks friend. I am really excited about third grade too. Praying for a good year with my girls, we seem to be off to a great start so that is promising.

  • They are so cute! Marissa is so tall!!! Happy back to school, friend!

    • Yes she is. Emily is looking to be every bit as tall too. I hope your first day back went well!

  • Oh my goodness Marissa’s dimples…..she is adorable..and tall!! And sweet Emily, of course she loves everything!! Love these pictures. Back to school pictures have always been a favorite but now with Dillon heading to school at 6am for football the chance of snapping one of the two of mine together has become much tougher.

    • Marissa had the best dimples. She came out with them. In fact mid delivery I screamed look she had dimples. TMI?! lol. I hope you get the chance to take one soon.

  • Your girls both seem suddenly so grown up in this post! Such cute pictures! Here’s to a fabulous year of kindergarten and 3rd grade!!

    • I know, right?! It is kind of killing me a bit :(. Thank you so much.

  • Desiree @ Macke Monologues

Marissa is a girl after my heart. I loved writing cursive, wanted to be a vet, and disliked math (still do) when I was in school!
Emily’s answer to what she dislikes was the best – she loves everything! And her shoes? Oh my goodness, those are perfect for her!!

    • She totally is a girl after your heart :). Aren’t those shoes the best ever. I adore them.
