Friday Highlights 2016, V20

Hello Friday!

It has been a long, boring, and very busy week. I never really knew that combination was actually possible, but it seems that it is. This was the first week that being on “summer break” has felt normal and I’ll confess I slacked a bit on the summer work I had planned for the girls. But today is Friday and the first day of a pretty big weekend, so we won’t be making up any work today!

{Joplin Memorial Run Weekend}

This weekend is the Joplin Memorial Run weekend. The girls will be running the fun run tonight. Marissa for her 3rd year in a row and Emily for her 2nd. Then I will be hitting the pavement at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday to Run my 3rd JMR half marathon (which will also be half marathon #5 for me). PLUS this year Russ is joining the fun too! About a week ago he randomly decided to run the half. I thought he was joking at first, but he wasn’t. So all 4 Newmans will be representing at the 2016 JMR weekend. So exciting!

{Five Years Strong}

This weekend is about so much more than running.
This weekend is about remembering, reflecting and running for those who can’t

Joplin Proud
This Sunday marks the 5 year anniversary of the Joplin tornado.

Five years ago I had JUST quit my job to make my transition to a stay at home mom permanent. Emily had just turned 3 months old and Marissa was 2. When the weather got dicey we decided to take cover in the bathroom that months earlier we had remodeled. We walked into that bathroom so unprepared for what was about to happen. After what seemed like forever it was over. I remember the panic I felt when it stopped, I wanted out of that bathroom so badly. Looking up to the vent I could see day light and knew the roof of our home was gone. Russ turned, opened the door then quickly shut it. He looked me right in the eyes and said “Everything that is REALLY important is inside of this bathroom.” He has never been more right and 5 years later thinking back to that moment my eyes still flood with tears. Our city had been ripped in half by that mile wide F5 tornado and life as we knew it was forever changed.

Five years later I can look back and see blessing after blessing that came from the storm.
God is so faithful friends.

{Spring Bucket List Update}

With so many people sharing their summer bucket lists this week i would be a total liar if I didn’t admit I was feeling all the pressure. I also feel like I am stuck in some sort of awkward spring summer limbo. We’re on summer break but technically we still have another month of spring left. The dates of the seasons and they way they feel are so confusing.

So this week we got to work and managed to cross 3 more things off our list with more things to come this weekend.

Spring Bucket List with Free Printable
So far we have finished:
Date Night
Make A Craft
Bake Something
Library Trip

4 down, 8 to go & a month left!

I would have been scared out of my mind if I were you! I get really nervous every time we have a tornado watch or warning and we have to hunker down with the kids in the basement. You guys are right though, everything really important was in that bathroom!

    • Thank God for a basement to go too! We still don’t have one, but our new house has a tornado shelter. We just hope and pray we never have to use it. God was so good to us.

Good luck this weekend at the race. Can’t wait to read about how all of you did. 🙂 Reading the part about the tornado brought tears to my eyes. Russ’ words were so spot on, but goodness would it be so incredibly hard to walk out of the bathroom and see all of your belonging like that. I always get nervous when we have tornado warnings. Usually I’m home alone with the kids, so that scares me even more. Have a great weekend lady!

    • They are nothing to take lightly and I am so glad that you don’t. We went into that bathroom so unprepared. Now I pack an emergency bag and have everything all laid out any time the weather gets iffy. I hope you have a great Monday friend!

  • I love what Russ said to you during the tornado- what wise words and a great leader! Your story amazes me every time I read it! I am really excited for your new link party!!

    • It still seems so surreal even five years later. Thanks Keri, it should be a lot of fun!

  • Everytime I hear your story about Joplin, I’m a little shaken. What a strong family and what wonderful words to hear Russ say! Have a good run and a wonderful weekend

    • Thank you so much friend. It was awesome.

  • How did I miss your rewind Friday link-up? You are the Queen of awesome link-ups! Five years since the Joplin tornado, wow! Those pictures are so humbling and what your husband said was fantastic. God is indeed so faithful.

    • I do have A LOT of link-ups going on, right?! Thank goodness they are just monthly and things I love to post about already!

  • Those tornado pictures are so heart tugging. And what a wise husband you have. Such calming words. Hope the race goes well and you make plenty of memories 🙂

    • We made so many happy memories this weekend. Can’t wait to share them in the coming week.

      Thank you.

  • Good luck on the run. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years! Don’t stress on the bucket list. It’s fun! 🙂

    • Thank you. I cany believe it either. It feels like forever and yesterday all at once.

  • Good luck with your run tomorrow, Beth!

  • Love the link-up idea! Good luck with your run! 🙂

I concur on the long and boring week, minus the busy for us. It was actually one of our less busy weeks. So awesome that you will all be running this weekend!! I can’t wait to read about it. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years. I still remember hearing about it like it was yesterday. I can’t imagine what it feels like for you that lived it. I’m in tears reading what Russ said to you all when you were in the bathroom. I’m also in the spring/summer limbo. Summer creeps up on us so fast here in Texas. We have unfinished items on our spring list, but I guess we will carry those over to our summer list. Hope you all have the best weekend, friend!

    • Time flies. It feels like it has been forever and it just happened all at once which is kind of bizarre really. I hope your Monday goes very well. Y’all are so close to summer!

  • Have a great run! Every time you share about the tornado I just still can’t believe it.

    • Sometimes I cant either. Have a great last week of school!!!

  • Desiree @ Macke Monologues

I can’t wait to hear all about this weekend’s run. And, five years? It doesn’t seem possible that much time has passed already.
Geocaching! We love hunting for little treasures. I hope you find some around you soon!

    • This weekend was great. I’ll be sharing details soon!!! I want to geocach soon. If it ever stops raining!

  • I got chills reading about that tornado and seeing pictures. insane.

    • Completely insane. Sometimes I still can’t believe it.

  • When I first started reading your blog I read some of your previous posts & watched the video you guys did after the tornado. I admire your faith & courage! I can’t imagine the fear you felt, but you’re exactly right, “stuff” doesn’t matter just the safety of your sweet family.

    • Exactly! The whole experience was so surreal but we came out stronger than ever. God is good!

  • Reading the story about your tornado experience gave me the chills! So glad you guys were okay – your husbands comment was totally right! Love the idea of your new linkup- can’t wait! Enjoy your weekend!

    • Thank you so much Leah. I hope you had a great weekend!

  • Meghan Flinn

Omg I had no clue about your tornado! How scary and what a reminder of what is really important. Absolutely heartbreaking to see photos of all that destruction though!

    • Crazy right?! Now we look back and can really see the good that came from it all.

  • That just brings tears to my eyes, thinking about such a scary natural disaster totaling your home. Russ is so wise. And also way to turn something negative into a positive.

    • Thank you friend. The whole experience was surreal and life changing.

  • So awesome that all of you are running in the race tomorrow! Good luck!

    • We had so much fun. Cant wait to share the recaps this week.

  • I had no idea about the tornado. I guess I never put two and two together. Seeing those pictures made me cry. Thank GOD you were all okay! XOXO
Phew…moving on. I can’t wait to hear about the race!

    • Crazy, right?! It’s just one of those things you never think will happen to you, then it does. God was so good to us in such a hard time. We are still overwhelmed thinking back.

      Soon, soon!
